Currently, marine waste is becoming a serious issue that received much attention from many countries in the world. At G20 (Japan, 06/2019) Environment Ministers have agreed to the outlines of a new international framework to tackle marine waste, especially, marine plastic litter and microplastics.
Vietnam is also taking this issue seriously, many projects and proposal are addressing to this issue. One of them, a “Proposal for establishing fundamental countermeasures of marine waste in Vietnam” has been proposed by JNK in cooperation with EATC.
In May 2019, the two companies had visited VASI for the first time to propose this proposal and introduced JNK and its capacity, experience and technologies to solve environmental problems, especially, its experience in marine waste issue in Japan. In June 2019, JNK and EATC had implemented a field survey at 3 coastal provinces, and a seminar had been held in July at VASI receiving many supportive comments from scientists, professors and related parties.
Following the suggestion of Dr. Ta Dinh Thi during the seminar, JNK and EATC had conducted a questionnaire survey on marine waste in 11 northern coastal provinces. At the meeting on 5/11/2019, EATC and JNK had reported the results of this surveys and represented the measures to deal with marine waste in Vietnam.
The presentation got a positive evaluation from VASI members. Dr. Ta Dinh Thi appreciated the efforts of the two companies, particularly the method of approaching and managing the project.
